Proper blog time management, especially for part-time bloggers, is crucial.
In the previous post in this series, I gave you five tips on how to improve your blog time management. And in this article, you can find five new ways to manage your limited time properly.

1. Hire a Coach
Sometimes, you just don’t have a clue.
You have so many blogging options to choose from, and yet, you don’t know which one is the right one:
- Should you take advantage of social media or not?
- How many posts should you write per week?
- What niche should you pick?
- <Enter your question here.>
Yes, this same thing has happened to me, too, but here is how I solved the situation.
Before I started this blog, I wasn’t entirely sure what my niche would be.
Then, I met a person (unfortunately, Ian is not providing coaching anymore), who gave me clear instructions on what to do. And with this approach, I probably saved months or even years of my time.
In particular, I learned:
- What niche to explore (online site builders, although I have now branched out to WordPress).
- What content type I should focus on (written content, but videos at some point, too).
- Don’t start an email list (at least at this stage of the blogging).
- Don’t spend time on social media (except if you’re recording YouTube videos).
For me, this advice was golden. It helped me to focus on the right things, and save quite a bit of my time.
So, how do you find a suitable person to coach you?
I suggest that you visit your favorite blogger’s blogs and see what services they can offer. You can also try to find the experiences of those bloggers and their coaching programs by searching in Google.
Also, there are plenty of blogging groups on Facebook. Perhaps someone over there knows the right coach for you?
2. Maximize Your UTBs
I came up with the term UTB when my son was a baby.
One day, I came home from work, and I noticed that our home was quiet and dark. I soon saw that my wife and son were taking a nap.
I also realized that I had some extra, or unexpected, time on my hands. This additional time block was perfect for blogging.
UTB stands for Unexpected Time Blocks, and they can occur - as the name implies - unexpectedly. The question is, are you prepared for them or not?
These UTBs are everywhere:
- Waiting for your turn in a public office.
- Missed your bus, and you are waiting for the next one at the cafe.
- You are traveling, and your family decides to go to the nearby spa. Unfortunately, you can’t go with them since you have caught a cold.
Do you see the pattern here? You crash into unexpected time blocks frequently, and the best way to maximize them is to have a laptop with you and an Internet connection.
Naturally, if the UTBs occur at your home, you can take advantage of them with any computer at hand. But to fully maximize the UTBs outside your home, a laptop is a must.
3. Plan Your Blogging Time
Do you know what you are going to do in your next blogging session?
When you have a plan in place, you can maximize the available time you have for your blogging activities.
For instance, you could decide that on Fridays, you’ll record a new YouTube video for your channel. Then, on Thursday, you do some prep work so that you can get right to business when your recording session starts.
This prep work might include:
- Figuring out what the topic of the video is going to be about.
- Simple notes that describe what you are going to say.
- What browser tabs should be open during your presentation?
- Rehearsing your speech in advance.
This way, when you start working on your videos, you can begin recording that video right away, without wasting your time on distractions or figuring out what to do.
4. Learn Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts are handy because commanding applications is often faster with a keyboard. Also, using a mouse is sometimes inconvenient, like when commuting.
Therefore, learning the most common shortcuts will improve your work productivity. Here are the most common ones that you should master:
Open a file
CTRL + O
CMD + O
Saving a file
CTRL + S
CMD + S
Copy selected item
CTRL + C
CMD + C
Select all items
CTRL + A
CMD + A
Paste copied item
CTRL + V
CMD + V
CTRL + Y
CMD + Y
CTRL + Z
CMD + Z
CTRL + P
CMD + P
However, this is just a shortlist of all the commands you can run from your keyboard (see the other common ones for Mac or PC). Besides, there are also application-specific shortcuts that you should learn as well.
For instance, if you want to reply to a Gmail message, hit R. Or in MonoSnap (freeware screen capture tool), capturing part of the screen happens with the combination of Option + CMD + 5 (in Mac).
Learning these shortcuts makes you more productive than if you were to operate your computer mainly with a mouse.
5. Negotiate with Your Family
If you have a family, they are also indirectly involved in your blogging.
You have to find time for blogging from somewhere, and very often, this time is taken from the same pool as the time you would spend with your family.
The question is, how do you fit both family time and the blogging time?
It all starts with clear communication by telling your family members why you blog in the first place. Once they understand your “why” (like to build a viable income source in the future), it might be easier to allocate time for blogging, instead of spending it with your family.
It’s also important to compensate for the time you spent with your blog with other family members.
For instance, you and your spouse could decide that because you spent two hours on the blog today, your spouse has two hours to do what he/she wants after you have finished blogging.
With this arrangement, the time usage is equal for both of you.
